Stone Story

Stone Story is a part of a bigger cycle, which I created during my stay at the art residency – Baer Art Center / Hofsos / Iceland (2015). In The Icelandic Chronicles, which I treat as a multi-element narration, I focus on the asymmetrical relation between man and nature. In this dependency the nature is thoughtless
and nevertheless, or maybe therefore, man does not have much influence on it. Stone Story is inspired directly by the legend from Hofsos neighbourhood. In the story the dominant plot concerns the dependency of the human being on nature. The video frame refers to the pointless activity which was described in the legend. Throwing stones into the ocean did not trigger any waves and did not help sailors to sail. Human effort was a failure and even a threat. A prepared set of objects – stones, on the one hand refers to stones which are present
in the video frame, and on the other exemplifies an unsuccessful interference with nature. The damaged pebbles, which I found around Hofsos, provoked me to repair them. The missing part of the stone which I sculptured is artificial, has a different colour and structure, is a kind of substitute. Therefore, interfering with (an unnatural process of making waves) as well as correcting (repairing stones) nature seems an abortive activity.

Opowieść o Kamieniach jest częścią większego cyklu, który stworzyłem podczas pobytu na rezydencji artystycznej – Baer Art Center / Hofsos / Islandia (2015). W Kronikach islandzkich, które traktuję jako wieloelementową narrację, skupiam się na asymetrycznej relacji między człowiekiem a naturą. W tej zależności natura jest bezmyślna
, a mimo to, a może dlatego, człowiek nie ma na nią większego wpływu. Opowieść o Kamieniach jest inspirowana bezpośrednio legendą z okolicy Hofsos. W opowieści dominuje wątek fabularny dotyczący zależności człowieka od natury. Kadr wideo nawiązuje do bezsensownej czynności opisanej w legendzie. Wrzucanie kamieni do oceanu nie wywoływało fal i nie pomagało żeglarzom pływać. Wysiłek człowieka był porażką, a nawet zagrożeniem. Przygotowany zestaw obiektów – kamieni z jednej strony nawiązuje do kamieni obecnych
w kadrze wideo, z drugiej jest przykładem nieudanej ingerencji w naturę. Uszkodzone kamyki, które znalazłem w okolicach Hofsos, sprowokowały mnie do ich naprawy. Brakująca część kamienia, którą wyrzeźbiłam jest sztuczna, ma inny kolor i strukturę, jest swego rodzaju substytutem, poprawianie (naprawianie kamieni) przyrody wydaje się działaniem chybionym.
